Design Manager

We are looking for Design Managers with a minimum of 10+ years relevant experience. Successful candidates must have P3 experience to manage the design process for a complex construction projects from commencement of design to the finalization of all design work and award of construction subcontracts. One of the Design Manager positions will be responsible for a hospital project; a new mental health facility and energy center as part of phase one of the Royal Columbia Hospital’s redevelopment.

Skills Required
  • At least 10+ years Design Management Experience in complex design-build commercial, institutional, construction projects (eg. hospitals, campus/schools) 
  • P3 experience required. 
  • Must have Design Build experience. 
  • Experience in managing the design management process from inception to project handover on large projects. 
Education Requirement
  • University and/or Technical degree specializing in Construction Management, Engineering or Architecture 
Responsibilities
The Design Manager is expected to lead and manage a team of staff that is responsible for the development of detailed design packages. Upon contract award, the Design Manager takes an active role in project delivery to ensure the program has a successful start-up, then supports the design process through the project. Experience running these programs should include: design of healthcare projects or facilities; pricing, schedule, contracts, procurement, safety and quality.

We are seeking candidates that have a post-secondary degree in architecture as well as significant experience and knowledge of the design of complex P3 projects. To support the Royal Columbia project, previous P3 healthcare experience is required. Ideal professionals will have demonstrated experience with:
  • Managing complex design projects. 
  • Leading large design teams that have different technical backgrounds. 
  • Working with integrated teams of consultants and contractors. 
  • Developing and managing project scopes. 
  • Coordinating the project's design with the applicable Federal, Provincial and City/Municipal governments in an effort to reduce conflicts, delays, etc. 
  • Delivering successful design-build executions. 
In addition, the position requires a professional who has thorough understanding of design and construction processes and methods that are needed for successful project implementation. Proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English is also required. The successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to be a high energy positive influence with the project team.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:
  • Review and understand contractual obligations and the project budgets. 
  • Possess a thorough understanding of the requirements of all other project stakeholders (functional, technical, aesthetic, process or otherwise). 
  • Lead the process in retaining the consultant team. 
  • Lead the management of the consultant team through the entire design process. 
  • Develop and manage QA processes to ensure the compliance with the contractual obligations and ensuring completeness of the design. 
  • Develop and manage processes to ensure meeting or bettering of the project budgets. 
  • Develop detailed design schedules that are coordinated with the overall project schedule. Ensure the consultant team complies with the design schedules. Ensure other parties provide information in a timely manner so as to not delay the design process. 
  • Regular reporting to project team members and senior management related to design schedule performance and quality of deliverables. 
  • Primary point of contact with the Client in relation to all design related matters. 
  • Primary point of contact with the consultant team. 
  • Primary point of contact with municipalities and other authorities having jurisdiction in relation to all design related matters. 
  • Develop technical expertise personally and within the district staff. 
  • Work with Business Development staff and other senior managers to support and or lead other specific business development initiatives within the district.
Salary and Benefits:
The salary is $125,000 - $130,000 and commensurate with experience. The remuneration package also includes Group Insurance coverage for medical/dental/vision care as well as life and disability insurance. Employees may also participate in the Employee Share Purchase Plan where contributions are matched by the Company and can be allocated to a RSP or non- registered account. This position is also eligible to participate in the Company’s Profit Sharing program.
