Reporting to the VP, Corporate Controller


Reporting to the VP, Corporate Controller, the Assistant Controller, Operations will be a hands-on manager responsible for leading the Accounts Payable function for subcontractors, project setup, internal controls over financial reporting and commodity taxation.  These following objectives must be balanced and prioritized:
  • Provide insight through analytics of accounts 
  • Partner with District Finance Managers and District Accountants in enabling controllership and governance over project accounting
  • Improve processes
  • Increase employee engagement
The Assistant Controller, Operations will directly supervise the District Accounting Support Group, which includes 6-8 District Accounting Assistants and 1-2 Accounting Clerks.
The role reports to the VP, Corporate Controller with dotted line accountability to the VP, Operational Finance. 

Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead the District Accounting support group, which includes anticipating future requirements, recruiting, training, mentoring, coaching and performance management with the goal of building a team that drives efficiencies and actively provides support to the districts.
  • Responsible for the governance and controllership over subcontractor compliance and cheque process, ensuring compliance with the established internal controls.
  • Lead a team in the planning, testing and reporting on the Company’s internal control over financial reporting (ICOFR), including making recommendations for improvements and providing training.
  • Review quarter end reports related to project reporting, such as quarterly management jobs, legal and warranty provisions, significant job report and account reconciliations in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring all reporting deadlines are met.
  • Responsible for the governance of selected job cost finance processes, such as project set up and maintenance, project asset management and journal entries, including reviewing and approving for entry into Viewpoint and recommending and implementing improvements in the processes to enhance operating efficiency.
  • Provides leadership, expertise and guidance on Provincial Commodity tax related issues to the District Finance Managers and District Accountants, including researching and providing audit support.  Develops processes and provides training to the accounting staff in the District on Provincial Commodity tax process, such that we mitigate risk to the Company. 
  • Provide expertise and guidance on project related accounting issues to District Finance Managers, District accountants, and operations in a timely manner and in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles, such as revenue recognition decisions and contract type determination.
  • Assists and coordinates the project related documentation in the annual audit process.
  • Ability to research and prepare analysis related to new accounting standards that specifically impact project accounting.
  • Ability to manage and work on various special projects, ensuring deadline is met.  Including but not limited to Accounting software upgrades and report enhancements.
  • Responsible for assisting the support departments (IT) in monthly, quarterly and year end reporting, including capitalization and budgets.  
  • Responsible for insurance allocation throughout the year, quarterly reconciliation and management of insurance accounts.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
Formal Education & Certification
  • University Degree in a related field of study 
Knowledge & Experience
  • Relevant work experience of at least 8 years with a history of career growth.
  • In depth understanding of project accounting, tax and IFRS is an asset.
  • System savvy.  Knowledge of Viewpoint and Spreadsheet Server is an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial leadership roles.
  • Infrastructure and public company experience an asset.

Other Requirements of the Role
