Charles obtained his degree in civil engineering from the University of Waterloo in 1986. Subsequently, he studied law at the University of Western Ontario where he obtained his bachelor of laws in 1990.
Before completing his bachelor of laws, Charles was employed as an engineer in the construction industry with a Toronto-based general contractor. He later developed his legal and management career in private practice, moving into in-house counsel with a national contractor, and an international construction and engineering organization.
Charles joined Bird in 2009 and leads the company’s risk management team through a collaborative approach with its operational centres. His knowledge of the construction and engineering industries, coupled with a practical business sense, provides Bird with one of the best specialists in this field.
Charles was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1992 and he has been certified as a specialist in construction law by the Law Society of Upper Canada since 2002. He is a past member of the executive of the Ontario Bar Association's construction section and he is currently a member of the executive of the Construction Sector In-House Counsel Forum.
