Message from the Inaugural Chair WCA's Women in Construction Initiative

Congratulations to Bird Construction's Jessica Lloyd who has been selected as the Inaugural Chair for the Winnipeg Construction Association's Women in Construction Group.

Upword, Winnipeg Construction Association's quarterly magazine has featured her empowering message below:

I am honoured to be the Inaugural Chair for the Winnipeg Construction Association's Women in Construction group.

As a young woman in the construction industry, I am often asked, "Why did you choose a career in construction?" Simply, my answer is passion. I truly believe you should love what you do. I knew construction was a male dominated industry, but I never let that deter me from pursuing my goals. When I finished my education and started working in the field, I realized that women still face challenges as a minority. Our knowledge is sometimes tested and we need to prove ourselves in order to be taken seriously.

I am excited to be part of a group that will provide support to women working in Manitoba's construction industry. I think it is important for us to help develop one another both professionally and personally, and to keep working towards a higher level of representation in the field.

The shortage of skilled workers is only growing, and there are huge opportunities for women to increase their participation in the industry. There are many construction-related career options available both on and off the job site.

This soon-to-be established Women in Construction group will unite women in the industry and encourage other women to consider a career in construction. Our goal is to provide members with a resource for education, networking, leadership and mentorship.

Together we can elevate the voice and success of women in construction.
