LEED Platinum for ETFO office in Toronto

As Originally Seen in the Daily Commercial News www.dcnonl.com :

The new Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) office in Toronto has officially received LEED Platinum certification, making it the first purpose-built structure in the city to be recognized with the highest environmental standard.

Building partners of the four-storey facility used new technology to bore down 50 storeys from the underground parking garage to place geothermal ‘columns’ after a major part of the building was complete, which is a first in Canadian geothermal heating and cooling.

“As educators, we are driven to lead by example,” said ETFO president Sam Hammond.

“That is why we wanted our office to be a model, and lead in terms of its environmental construction and footprint.”

The technology used to achieve this ‘first’ makes it possible for older buildings to be retrofitted with geothermal energy.

The system has achieved 71 per cent reduction in heating and cooling energy for ETFO, and it also shortened the construction time period.

The project was lead by Bird Construction and KPMB Architects and the geo-exchange installation was provided by Fenix Energy.

Other efficiency features include daylight motion sensors and solar shades to reduce solar heat gain.
