Bird at Centre Ice

Bird has completed the renovation to the Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary, Alberta. The Olympic-sized ice surface is home to the U of C Dino's, AAA Midget Northstars, Calgary Junior A Mustangs and the Western Hockey League.

The project involved the demolition and reinstallation of the concrete rink slab, refrigeration systems (both in-slab and in the mechanical room) and dasher boards. The new dasher board system updates the old wooden built system with galvanized steel and seamless glass, eliminating the old stanchions for a clean look and improved player safety. During the project, we painted arena bowl, provided new sport flooring to the players benches and lobby, as well as a new bench capping to the entire arena for a uniform look. In addition to our work in the Father David Bauer Arena, we also completed the new sport flooring in the washrooms, change rooms and spectator area of the Norma Bush Arena.

Some challenges encountered during project included working in an occupied building and limited access and laydown area on the property. Air quality testing was continually completed to ensure operating equipment were not posing any risks to construction or tenant safety. There was only one construction access to the Father David Bauer Arena and that was through the adjacent Norma Bush Arena. The arena slab had weight restrictions, which limited the size of the equipment that could be used to remove the old concrete and the bedding sand had to stored and reused.

Prior to handing over the building, Bird organized a staff hockey game with City officials. Nothing like testing out the product! Thanks to all who showed up for the game and another great project, Built By Bird.
