IKEA Groundbreaking

On Tuesday, August 9 an official groundbreaking ceremony was held at Dartmouth Crossing for the new IKEA Nova Scotia store. Bird’s Vice President and Manager of Operations for the Nova Scotia region, Rene Cox and John Duggan, respectively, were on the site for the event.

In May 2016, Bird was officially awarded the construction management contract to build the new store that will be two-storeys and approximately 330,000 square feet in size. The main floor will have a showroom and large warehouse. The second level will house additional show room space, a restaurant and administration offices.

Designed to be IKEA’s most sustainable building Canada, the new building will incorporate many green features including rooftop solar panels to generate electricity; a solar wall inside, which will use passive solar energy to heat air moving the wall; geothermal energy for half of the building’s heating and cooling needs; a living wall of plants to help purify the air in the building; and two electric vehicle recharging stations.

The store is expected to open in the fall of 2017.
