Communication Tower

Located on a remote site, 65 kilometres north of Fort McMurray, Bird was one of the first contractors on the client’s site. The scope of work included the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of a 100-metre-high communication tower, communication systems building, and a 100-kilowatt temporary power system to support the tower and future equipment. The tower provides radio communications, cellular services, topographic surveying and mapping support. The foundation work, self-performed by Bird, includes 150 cubic metres of concrete and 27 driven steel piles. The erection of the tower was a two crane lift and significant planning was required by all. We were able to leverage our experience and lessons learned from a similar tower project.

Bird met the client’s disciplined procedures and standards. The careful review processes demanded the full engagement of the team to convey our clear-cut procedures and to ensure that they aligned with the client’s expectations. The benefit of the full review process was articulated at a critical moment in the construction schedule when an otherwise unforeseeable mechanical problem with the crane was identified in advance of a critical lift, thus averting a potentially serious situation. Once resolved, the work progressed efficiently as planned.

The project was a success and was performed injury-free with the support of our client. Bird will capitalize on this experience to ensure continuous improvement on future projects that we will pursue at similar locations.
