Donald Cameron Centre

Recognizing the potential for considerable cost savings for the client, Bird raised the existing building by three feet to allow the centre’s addition to be built on grade. This increase also brought it closer to the neighbouring Kinnear Centre elevation, thereby eliminating the need for costly grade separation considerations. The significant undertaking required internal bracing and frame work while hydraulic jacks were used to lift the structure.

As numerous design changes were incorporated into the scope of work, the Bird team expedited construction by extending work hours and increasing man power to ensure the initial completion date was reached.

Bird not only saved the building from demolition but reused the original stone foundation for landscaping while regional building materials and sustainable certified wood were used for the 5,800 square foot building addition. The building is LEED Gold Certified.
