Langara College Student Union Building and C Building

This Student Union Building and C Building included multiple aspects of new construction and upgrades. A seismic upgrade to an existing six-storey building, which was originally used as a library, was completed by adding concrete shear walls internally. Numerous options were reviewed and the final shear wall system was chosen as it could accommodate the functional changes and incorporate the mechanical and electrical system upgrades. The new two-storey SUB included inclined walls, sloping roofs and large thin cantilevers. The form was achieved by using a total concrete structure so that the floors and walls could be formed in various profiles to achieve the desired appearance.

Notably, the complex is the first ever construction to feature Thermenex, a revolutionary thermal energy exchange system. The complex produces zero greenhouse gas emissions from heating and cooling as it employs a unique direct energy transfer system that stores energy and moves it throughout the buildings to areas where it is required for heating and cooling. Bird also installed a geothermal heating system. The project has officially received LEED® Gold certification.
