H.J. O’Connell, a division of Bird, provided excavation, backfill and concrete placement services for two buildings at the Long Harbour Processing Plant. Additional work on the port site included a storage tank, pipe support and conveyor support foundations.
During initial excavation for the two main building foundations, unexpected poor soil conditions were encountered. HJO worked with the owner to mobilize additional equipment and craft resources to excavate and dispose of the poor soil and backfill to compact the site with suitable rock fill from the owner’s on-site quarry. The project required over 95,000 cubic yards of soil to be excavated and 84,000 cubic yards of backfill to be placed and compacted.
