Suncor Voyageur Sulphur Pits

As part of the Suncor Voyageur project, Bird constructed the sulphur pits to enable the storage of molten sulphur before it was transferred to the voyageur upgrader expansion. To achieve the thermal insulation properties required to keep the sulphur in its liquid state, a metre-thick slab of cellular concrete was installed beneath the structure and 15 centimetres of FOAMGLAS® insulation was applied around the exterior walls. The unique function of this facility necessitated the exclusive use of stainless steel on the structure, including the waterstop.
