One of Canada’s largest open-pit mining operations is the Kearl oil sands project. Under this contract with Imperial Oil Resources, Bird constructed a four-bay heavy duty truck shop extension, maintenance shop extension, and heavy-duty wash bay. Extensive work was required for tie-ins and upgrades in the existing buildings, including the control room. Additionally, the construction of the buildings required miscellaneous modules and work inside the control room building. Within this contract, Bird was issued numerous contract modifications/change orders to complete civil works for this project The construction consisted of a mixture of concrete foundations and steel structure enclosed with metal cladding and concrete precast panels.

Working at a live plant required careful coordination of site logistics. The team developed innovative strategies to manage construction activities inside the existing buildings to ensure minimal impact on ongoing production activities. All project stakeholders were invested in providing safe and healthy working conditions at Kearl/ExxonMobil, concentrating efforts toward the project goal that “Nobody gets hurt”. Through worker safety training and regular safety meetings, we promoted a culture of safety awareness.
