MISSISSAUGA, Ont.—Infrastructure Ontario has tapped a consortium headed by Bird Construction Inc. to build nine separate Ontario Provincial Police facilities from suburban Mississauga to remote Fort Frances, Ont.

The new facilities for police detachments in nine cities across the province will replace older buildings that have reached the end of their useful lifespans. Along with administrative areas for police and support staff, each site will include evidence storage vaults, holding cells and interview rooms.

The P3 project is Phase 2 of an OPP modernization effort. Bird also led construction on Phase 1, which included 18 new facilities and cost $292.7 million. The province says the contract for Phase 2 is worth $182 million.

The consortium that will design, build and finance the project includes NORR Architects; MCW Consultants Ltd. as the engineer; Bird Design-Build Construction Inc. responsible for the design-build; and Bird Capital Limited Partnership as the financial advisor.

Construction is expected to begin this fall, while substantial completion on all sites is scheduled for late 2020.

Along with the sites in Mississauga and Fort Frances, the project includes police facilities in Clinton, Hawkesbury, Little Current, Marathon, Parry Sound, Moosonee and Orillia.
