To address immediate and significant needs of the existing Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit, Stuart Olson was contracted to renovate Level 4 and 5 of the BMT Unit located at the Foothill Medical Centre.  Reasons for the renovation included patient safety, accreditation and capacity.
One of the challenges to this renovation was accommodating the continued operation of the BMT Unit and surrounding facilities. A phased approach was adopted for the project, allowing continued patient care. The safety of facility staff and patients was of utmost concern during the project.
Pre-construction, Construction and Post Construction services were provided by Stuart Olson for this project. Project scope included the
full renovation of 32 patient washrooms (new fixtures, wall coverings
and flooring), partial renovation of 32 patient rooms (millwork, floor and wall coverings), upgrade and redesign of two nurse call on units, and converting room 558 into two separate rooms.
The long term plan for the facility includes relocation to the new Calgary cancer centre scheduled to open in 2024; however, an interim solution was required to address Infection Prevention and Control (IP&C) standard requirements.
