This processing facility is the first facility of its scope, size and complexity. It includes a processing plant, warehouse, office space, and its own electrical substation. The processing facility will derive protein from both canola and peas.
Utilizing in-house design and Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) services, the Bird Design Team worked with the consultant to design the facility to specifically meet the Client supplied processing equipment. The Design Team also worked closely with external consultants and manufacturers from across North America to optimize the building’s design to accommodate the equipment. Bird provided design-assist and constructability services to ensure the project’s scope was met without compromising the budget and schedule.
As the first processing facility of its scope, size, and complexity, BIM and VDC were critical processes that allowed design teams, construction teams, and the Client to make quick decisions together. Consultants created and provided Design Models for subtrades to expand on and create updated construction models to be utilized by the site team. The in-house VDC Coordinator managed the digital processes throughout the project, providing the essential service of overseeing the digital portion of the project from start to finish.
The Client anticipates additional phases to the new processing plant, including expanding the building footprint, a spray drier tower and increasing the process area. The Design Team worked with the Owner to ensure the building is designed in a way to accommodate future expansions.
