Conklin Sports Multiplex

The new sports multiplex in the remote municipality of Conklin features an indoor ice rink with spectator seating, a gymnasium which can be transformed into a banquet area complete with events stage, and various arts and multipurpose rooms to serve the needs of the community, from children to senior citizens. The scope of work included office and administration spaces which house the local RCMP detachment, medical offices and emergency supplies. Bird also undertook the construction of facility parking, access roads, site trails, and the planting of trees, shrubs, and grass around the facility.

Due to the remote location, managing labour and materials was a challenge. Material deliveries needed to be scheduled well in advance to ensure they would arrive on time and not delay the schedule. This was especially important during the winter months when roads were treacherous and sometimes closed due to poor conditions. With the nearest major airport located in Fort McMurray, which was a 2 hour drive away, weather played a large role in the transportation of materials and people.

The location also had an impact on the availability of skilled labour. Finding enough skilled labourers locally was very difficult, and therefore Bird needed to hire workers who would travel back and forth to site working on a shift schedule.
