Edson Healthcare Centre & Continuing Care Facility
The Edson Healthcare Centre and Continuing Care Facility replaced an aging existing hospital with a new campus of over 236,800sq.ft on a greenfield site. The new facilities provide local residents with Acute Care, Continuing Care and Primary Healthcare Services in a single location. The facility is designed to take advantage of the natural surroundings and boasts views of forested areas from patient rooms in the main hospital and 76-bed Continuing Care facility. The main hospital building includes acute care beds, ambulatory care, emergency care, diagnostics, renal dialysis and mental health services.
In spite of a large volume of Owner and Consultant driven Change Orders, the project was still turned over to meet Alberta Health Services’ opening requirements in September, 2016. Variances from the original schedule
and budget are due to added scope and design changes. Changes were required to coordinate with owner supplied equipment and added owner security requirements, which affected the finishing, mechanical and electrical trades. Additional structure was added while construction was ongoing to accommodate owner supplied lights, booms and other suspended equipment. The project team phased the turnover of the facilities to allow Alberta Health Services time to do their operational commissioning and clinical cleaning.
