Evanston Centre
Evanston Centre is a commercial strip mall consisting of 11 buildings, with Sobeys occupying the anchor building. Bird’s scope of work included site work and services for all buildings, from the base-build to the tenant fit-up. The buildings are composed of concrete foundation pads, structural steel and stud infill. Exterior finishes include hardi-siding and decorative brick. Bird incorporated many architectural features including decorative art pieces and trellis timber framing that created a welcoming atmosphere and will help
establish the area as a shopping destination for Calgarians.
At project outset, the Owner decided to phase construction. Bird drew upon its considerable construction management experience to mitigate the challenges presented by the phased construction. Four buildings were completed while Phase One was open and operating. Careful planning was required to choose site access and material lay down areas that would not disrupt business. Effective trades coordination and oversight ensured consistency among the multiple buildings on which different subcontractors were engaged.
Other challenges on the project included managing permanent utilities for the site. Bird worked closely with the Owner and tenants to gain an understanding of the power and gas requirements.
