R.E. Mountain Secondary School
This new LEED® Gold secondary school is 3 storeys high, 80,000 sq. ft. in area, and will accommodate 1,700 students. The structure is a combination of steel and concrete with metal cladding and brick. R.E. Mountain is an important milestone for families and students in Langley, due to the rapid growth of the community and construction in the developing area. As such, it was important to not only create a quality building that will become an established part of a new community, but also to be highly efficient with the schedule in order to deliver the building in time for the upcoming school year.
The design philosophy of this project was to create a educational environment that was accessible to a variety of learning styles. Both the design and materials were chosen to foster a sense of openness and community, to encourage the student body to feel aligned and motivated. Through natural light, natural ventilation, rational floor plans, improved visibility for staff, and connections to the outdoors, this new school will provide a safe and comfortable learning environment that promotes the vibrancy of high school life.
