Going from a sewage lagoon in the 50s, to a landfill in the 70s, to recreational facilities in the 80s and 90s, the need for new and upgraded recreational spaces was great, and the city opted to re-close the landfill to more stringent standards.
Revitalization of an underdeveloped brownfield turned into a 30 hectare recreation park, plus a 5 acre restored wetland, Riel Marsh. Stuart Olson supplied and placed approximately 90,000m3 of clean clay fill over an area of approximately 8.4 hectares and was responsible for the construction of a new rodeo performance arena including gates, fencing, pens and bleachers.
The Riel Park redevelopment included the demolition and disposal of existing fencing, bleachers, rodeo pens and the BMX concrete bunker and track.
Also included was the installation of a new BMX club house facility, construction of a new BMX clay/asphalt track complete with underground irrigation, and the supply and and installation of a new all season washroom facility.
