Royal Inland Hospital Clinical Services Building
Bird was the Design-Builder for this seven-storey addition to the Royal Inland Hospital. The new LEED® Gold certified clinical services building features an expanded and enhanced space for medical outpatient services, including IV therapy, vascular improvement program, community respiratory therapy, pre-surgical screening, cardiology, and neurodiagnostics. There is also space for the University of British Columbia’s Medical School clinical education program, which represents an important investment in the future recruitment and retention of physicians and staff to the Kamloops area. The project included the construction of a four-and-a-half-storey parkade accommodating 350 parking stalls, three commercial retail units, and two levels of clinical service space.
Careful planning and coordination was required on the tight and sloping site. For example, Bird ensured that there was minimal impact on vehicular access during the construction of the pedestrian bridge connecting the new facility to the existing hospital.
The addition establishes a new gateway to the campus and fosters a sense of identity. The design takes advantage of existing site conditions and embraces the concept of connection by providing a welcoming pedestrian environment. Wood is introduced to the façade, reinforcing the “Wood First” imperative, and contributing to a pedestrian friendly ground plane.
