StFX University, Riley and O'Regan Hall
The StFX Varsity Drive Twin Residences (Riley Hall and O’Regan Hall) contain 170 dormitory rooms each. Designed to function as a hotel in the summer months, the buildings feature reception areas, fitness rooms, kitchens, and movie theaters, along with impressive roof top lounges for public functions.
Both residences feature a 4th floor lounge with coffered ceilings, skylights and an abundance of curtain wall glazing to allow natural light to flood the public areas. The buildings are heated and cooled by a geothermal system, that distributes heated or cooled water through the floor slabs. Electrical loads are reduced due to a 100% LED based lighting system, controlled by occupancy sensors.
Similar to previous projects completed at the University, it was of paramount importance that the new residences follow the historical design aesthetic of the existing campus architecture, as well as the interior spaces perform as intended. The Bird design/construction team utilized sketches, models and full scale mockups to test various design strategies prior to construction.
