The University of British Columbia Indian Residential School Dialogue Centre
Forming part of the campus’ Library Garden redesign, the 620 square-metre IRSHDC serves as a point of access for Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada records for those affected by the residential school system, and also for those who would like to learn more about Indigenous people and their role in shaping Canada.
The building design makes extensive use of natural materials, as per UBC’s mandate for sustainability. The exterior features exposed wood, charred wood cedar siding, and cross-laminated timber sourced in British Columbia. The interior includes a boardroom, offices, a small kitchen, washrooms, and an elevator.
Bird overcame numerous challenges during the tie-in of the library such as mitigating noise and minizing disrtuptions to the existing campus activity during excavation and M&E connection work. Wet weather conditions also affected waterproofing and concrete pouring, and Bird created a heated enclosure to ensure proper pouring and curing. Bird’s experience and dedication ensured that the IRSHDC was ready to be occupied on schedule and on budget.
