YYC WestJet Elevator Replacement
Stuart Olson’s work on this project consisted of the installation of a customized elevator, requiring the removal of an existing elevator, and the demolition of the existing structure, including slabs, elevator, shaft and mechanical room walls.

Space constraints and the need for a new elevator to meet code/life safety standards, a custom elevator had to be procured. The new elevator required a masonry shaft, larger than the existing drywall one. This required demolition of the existing structure to create space for the new shaft, as well as adjustment to the roof structure due to the space constraints. The upgraded elevator consists of a side opening on the mezzanine level, and a front opening on the lower level, making it more accessible and functional in the tight space available.

All the work was carried out while maintaining access to the WestJet Encore gates and without disruption to the airline’s schedule. Stuart Olson worked around peak travel times to ensure passenger comfort was maintained. For example, noisy work was completed during breaks in arrival and departure schedules. Deliveries were coordinated with YYC staff, as material had to be brought across the external apron without causing any impact to planes as they accessed the gates.

The WestJet Portal project was a branding project for the existing Encore area, carried out after the completion of the Encore elevator replacement. In executing this work, Stuart Olson coordinated with both YYC and WestJet to install branded wall covering, signage and a new portal entrance in the main concourse area which would draw peoples attention to the encore area and act as a wayfinding installation.
