This is the second Alberta Schools Alternative Procurement project delivered through the Public-Private Partnership model. The project includes 10 K-4, Grades 5-9, and K-9 schools for the communities of Calgary, Edmonton, Langdon, and Okotoks.
The benefit of the Public-Private Partnership model was that the 10 new schools opened in communities with high-priority infrastructure needs two years sooner than if traditional construction methods were employed.
Accommodating almost 8,000 students, the schools opened for students in time for classes in September 2012. The new schools were built using a standard core design and are complemented by modular classrooms that can be removed or added to in response to fluctuations in the local population. The modular classrooms appear as permanent classrooms on the inside with painted drywall, drop ceilings, and large windows. All schools and modular classrooms were built to LEED® Silver certification standards. However, the majority of the new schools achieved a higher level of certification, LEED® Gold.
