Nason, a subsidiary of Bird,completed two projects for Strathcona Storage Limited Partnership and its majority partner, ATCO Energy Solutions, at their salt cavern site just east of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta — a brine pond and associated pump house, as well as a sedimentation pond and pump house. The brine pond contains the salt water that is extracted from the salt caverns to make way for the hydrocarbon storage. The pond is designed to hold approximately 606,000 m³ of brine and is lined with a multi-layer HDPE membrane. Pumping brine to and from the cavern, the pump house contains three vertical turbine pumps that are capable of transporting approximately 340 m³ of product per hour.

The sedimentation pond scope of work included the construction of one pond with two operating cells (each cell is 15,000 m³ usable volume for a total of 30,000 m³ in the pond) and a pump house to remove water runoff, facilitate primary water treatment and then pump the water to the various oil and gas facilities in the area for use as process water. Nason self-performed the concrete pump house structure, the pipe fabrication, pipe installation, and electrical and instrumentation scope. Both projects were completed with tight schedules to meet the summer 2016 completion date. Schedule constraints resulted in continuous shifts to complete the pump house construction on time.
