Supported on stone and mortar foundations, the structures of these buildings consisted of load bearing masonry walls supporting a wood floor system. In order to preserve the heritage character, Bird ensured the exterior facades remained intact. Since the walls were unstable, the construction sequence included delicate reinforcement of the two foot thick walls using over 2,500 stainless steel anchors.

This allowed for the systematic gutting of the interior wood and masonry structures in preparation for the erection of a new independent structural steel skeleton to support the new floor plates. It was a criterion of the local historical society that the interior and exterior detailing reflect the original construction features. Through close co-operation with the owner and consultants, Bird was able to successfully complete this unique project.
