This project comprised the simultaneous construction of three new
K-4 Schools in Calgary. All three schools followed the same design consisting of a central lobby with wings running out from it, as well as peaked roofs that allowed for ground to ceiling windows to let in natural light. The schools were all turned over on budget and on schedule for the start of the school year.

With a 3,498-square-metre footprint, each school features numerous classrooms, a gymnasium, a library, administration offices plus a mechanical room on the second floor. The Owner required the project to be sustainable by attaining LEED® Silver certification and incorporating solar photovoltaic panels on the roofs. We utilized VDC/BIM on all three of these schools.

Bird encountered many challenges on this project, including working through the COVID-19 pandemic to meet
an already tight schedule, coordinating detailed integration of architectural ceiling cloud systems with functional mechanical and electrical elements, as well as organizing a complicated photovaoltaic panel system
with our roofing package.

While it was a great advantage that the three project scopes were identical, it was important that all document control, vendor submittals and material deliveries were coordinated on a “per project” basis.

Bird also utilized our carpenter training program to meet government requirements for the use of apprentices on larger projects. All three schools employed journeymen carpenters who worked with apprentice carpenters as per required rates. Bird also worked with all applicable sub-contractors to ensure that they met these same apprenticeship program requirements.
