The Canmore Recreation Centre Lifecycle Project focused on the repurposing and modernization of the interior space to better suit the changing needs of the town. The scope of work included reroofing, replacing the boiler, and upgrading the existing ice rink within the facility. This necessitated the installation of a new ice plant that was also serving the adjacent curling rink.

Bird leveraged its considerable construction management experience to propose cost-effective alternatives to originally proposed materials that would maintain the required functionality and longevity of the original product, for example, switching out masonry walls for drywall partition walls. During pre-construction, Bird also identified that not all the flooring needed to be removed/demolished. By only removing the flooring where sanitary lines and piping was being installed/replaced, the demolition costs were reduced and schedule was expedited. The reuse of materials and strategic demolition further aided the tight schedule, and these measures saved the client over $100K in construction costs.

When tying in the new sprinkler system, Bird completed an extensive review to verify the existing system would integrate without any issues. Unfortunately, they were not completely compatible. This required extra work from the team to make the necessary adjustments to the existing system to avoid the costly replacement of the entire buildings sprinkler system. Bird diligently managed scheduling, the sequencing of work, and material deliveries, enabling the facility to remain open during construction.
