Building NX is an ambitious deep energy retrofit located at Humber College’s North Campus. The renovated 1980s building is the first retrofit in Canada to achieve the Canada Green Building Council’s (CaGBC) Zero Carbon Building - Design Certification, and has achieved the first Passive House EnerPHit Certification for a non-residential building in Canada. Through a deep energy retrofit, it has been transformed into the most energy efficient building on campus, and one of the most energy efficient buildings in North America.

The project scope included a complete upgrade of the building envelope; comprised originally of existing glass block, double-pane vision glazing, and insulated metal panel system; as well as replacement of existing mechanical and electrical systems. The use of a 25 kWh PV rooftop array provides an onsite renewable resource. Overall, the retrofit has resulted in a 70% reduction in energy use intensity, a 90% reduction in GHG emissions, and a 97% reduction in heating energy.
