To ensure the successful execution of the concrete mass pours, Bird hosted several pre-execution meetings. The 11,700 cubic yards of concrete foundations consisted of pile caps, grade beams, columns, and pedestals for structural steel and mechanical equipment. This extensive job required the installation of 550 cast-in-place concrete piles ranging from 24 to 60 inches in diameter and as deep as 98 feet.
Bird encountered poor soil conditions, large rocks and a high water table, making the concrete pile installation operation difficult to perform. To allow for the installation of the piles, Bird drilled through the rock layer and used single and double casings to overcome the water in the soil.
