Bird was successfully contracted to design, build and short-term finance the Moncton Downtown Centre. The facility includes a single NHL-sized ice surface with more than 9,000 permanent seats. The arena is the home of the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The facility also includes a reconfiguration design of 10,000 seats to accommodate other events. The downtown centre features flexible space, a club lounge, private boxes, and a multi-use outdoor plaza facility that includes an outdoor skating rink.

As part of the city’s vision, the new centre will act as a catalyst for downtown redevelopment. Bird partnered with the city to host public information sessions and workshops. The results of these workshops influenced several aspects of the building’s design, in particular the multi-use outdoor plaza facility. Conceived by Bird as a public gateway, the plaza provides entertainment for the community throughout the year with public art, seating, concessions, outdoor skating, as well as other sports and entertainment events.
