Delivered using an alternative financing and procurement model, Bird was a key member of the Ontario Provincial Police Modernization project team and served as the design-builder. The fast-tracked, multiple site project consisted of three unique building types: detachments, regional command centres, and forensic identification units. All of the 18 facilities are targeting LEED® Silver certification.

Special aspects of the project included high-security buildings with progressive collapse design considerations to withstand an earthquake and act as post-disaster facilities, complex information technology and communications systems, specialized security considerations, assembly functions, and public and functional space separated by security barriers.

One of the greatest challenges of the project was the coordination of 18 sites dispersed throughout the province. Accessibility to the sites and the availability of trades and building materials were all key factors associated with the completion of this project. Bird actively solicited trades by developing relationships with a number of trade organizations throughout the province. The zoning, environmental, site plans, and municipal approvals for each site were strictly coordinated with the sequence of construction and with a work plan that maximized the input of our regional partners to achieve our compressed schedule. The project has been awarded the Ontario General Contractors Association’s Ontario Builder Award.
