The new six-storey Saint John Law Courts houses 13 courtrooms, a barristers’ lounge, office space for the judiciary, court services, public prosecutors, sheriff services, policing and the Department of Public Safety. The new high-security facility consolidates a number of provincial and federal law courts within a 100-kilometre radius.

As part of the revitalization efforts for downtown Saint John, Bird worked on a tight site with close proximity to two other major infrastructure projects. Bird’s scope of work also included an underground tunnel that the team partially completed for the law courts, while another contractor completed the other half for the new police headquarters.

Bird actively pursued the leadership role among the other general contractors working in the area by hosting meetings to coordinate schedules and logistics, including evening and weekend work and material deliveries. Every effort was made to mitigate risk and disturbance to surrounding landowners, ultimately ensuring each project did not interfere with another, allowing timelines to be met.

LEED^® Silver certified, the external skin of the building consists of five different finishes including concrete pre-cast, curtain wall, metal siding, distinctive copper siding, panels of brick siding and decorative quarry stone to symbolize the strength of justice fulfilled within the courts.
