Attributing to the Bird’s 70 per cent repeat client rate is the relationship Bird shares with Sheridan College. Bird has completed work at two of Sheridan’s campuses including the Davis Campus and the new Hazel McCallion Campus. Bird’s work at the Davis Campus includes the Centre for Social Innovation and the Davis Welcome Centre.

Bird entered into a design-build contract to construct the Centre for Social Innovation. The campus needed additional classroom space and a student library to accommodate the growing campus. Among the many green components of this LEED Silver building, the most notable is the centre’s bio-wall, an indoor vertical hydroponic garden that acts as a natural air filter. Aesthetically pleasing, yet challenging was the centrally located two-storey staircase. Each of the two steel flights are over 15 feet tall, weighing more than 40,000 pounds, and required extensive welding and careful coordination during the on-site fabrication. The result is a series of spirals that appear to hang from their upper edges and roll through the central cavity.

The Davis Welcome Centre includes 18,000 square feet of interior alternations to better serve students. Exterior work includes the fabrication of an entrance canopy complete with walkways and landscaping.
