Sobeys Sage Creek is the first in a series of new Sobeys stores to be launched across the country. As a general contractor capable of building large retail projects, our proven success comes from understanding the compressed schedules and changing requirements that accompany projects in the retail sector. Bird welcomed the challenge to deliver Sobeys’ new store concept.

The project was awarded in two parts: the base building package, including all foundations, building structure and shell, followed by the interior fit-up package. The interior fit-up package was released later than anticipated due to the fact that it was the first model of its kind in Canada. As a result, construction activities were accelerated to meet the store’s opening date. Our team worked extended hours and weekends to complete the project. Bird led the charge with as many as 140 workers on-site focusing on building construction while Sobeys’ crew worked on the interior fixturing including shelving, equipment installation and product placement.

Bird self-performed the concrete foundations, concrete slabs, carpentry and miscellaneous specialities installation. The complex underground plumbing required excavations as deep as three metres to accommodate the slopes required to drain the building.
