This fast-track P3 project aimed to meet the increasing healthcare needs of the residents of the Northwest Territories and the Kitikmeot Region of Nunavut. Bird was part of the Boreal Health Partnership, the consortium that was awarded the contract by the Government of the Northwest Territories. Bird was also an equity provider, and worked with a joint venture partner to complete design and construction.

The new 27,270-square-metre structural steel facility consists of a two-storey podium and three-storey inpatient tower. A number of wood elements create a welcoming atmosphere, including a freestanding mass timber entrance and wooden cladding. Outpatient and 105-bed inpatient services include medical imaging, dialysis, obstetrics, pediatrics, cardiology, and mental health departments. An expanded emergency department with two trauma bays and day procedure and surgery suites were also included in the design.

This was the largest capital investment in the history of the Government of the Northwest Territories. Bird worked efficiently with all consortium partners to deliver this project on schedule and on budget.

Bird was committed to including Indigenous people and other local parties on the project and succeeded in exceeding the core targets. Bird also worked with the owner to make additional investments to support local people on the project and the local community wherever possible.
