Located at one of Halifax’s busiest intersections, the iconic Mills Brothers store has been demolished and the site is being prepared for a new mixed-use building currently named The Mills - in tribute to its former site owner.

The new Mills development will include a 7,900 sq. m (85,000 sq. ft) parkade (two levels underground, eight levels above ground), 2,970 sq. m (32,000 sq. ft) of commercial space, and 18,860 sq. m (203,000 sq. ft) of residential building area (containing approximately 190 rental apartment units).
Bird’s scope of work for this development includes pre-planning and design process management. Bird is also responsible for the base buildings and the interior fitup of the residences. The exterior building wall envelope is a combination of aluminum curtainwall, heavy gauge steel studs/exterior board/membrane/insulation, aluminum windows, masonry, and metal cladding facades. Bird will install a combination of conventional and green roofs.
Interior finishes for residential units are expected to be high-end.

With limited laydown options and the high traffic nature of building in the city’s downtown core, heavy emphasis is being placed on site logistics and planning for public safety.
