The building design makes extensive use of natural materials, as per UBC’s mandate for sustainability. The exterior features exposed wood, charred wood cedar siding, and cross-laminated timber, sourced in British Columbia. The interior includes a boardroom, offices, a small kitchen, washrooms, and an elevator. 

Bird overcame numerous challenges during the tie-in of the library such as mitigating noise and minizing disrtuptions to the existing campus activity during excavation and M&E connection work. Wet weather conditions also affected waterproofing and concrete pouring, and Bird created a heated enclosure to ensure proper pouring and curing. Bird’s experience and dedication ensured that the IRSHDC was ready to be occupied on schedule and on budget.
