The University of British Columbia swing space consists of a four-storey building of classrooms, lecture halls and offices that has the capacity to house 800 students. A special feature in this building is the passive air handling system designed to significantly reduce the air conditioning and heating loads. This system utilizes six foot diameter concrete air handling pipes beneath the building to temper the air to approximately 55 degrees Celsius before it enters the facility.
This building is also the first concrete tilt-up building built on campus. This design approach provided the university with a concrete building in a reduced time frame and at a reduced cost relative to a conventional cast-in-place building.
