Voisey's Bay civil works required mobilization of all civil construction equipment necessary to complete the infrastructure work. Civil works included over 6 million cubic metres of material excavation, 2 million cubic metres of rock excavation, and the construction of almost 20 kilometres of main mine haul road and access roads. Eight kilometres of pipes/culverts were installed, as well as in excess of 250,000 square kilometres of HDPE (high density polyethylene) liner was applied to the mine settling ponds.
Despite northern climates, strict environmental parameters and schedule constraints, the entire project was fast-tracked. Throughout construction, considerable resources were dedicated to successfully train aboriginal workers in cooperation with our partners, the Labrador Inuit Association and the Innu Nation.
