The Wapisiw Lookout deck design combines contemporary and traditional Aboriginal materials. A windscreen built of natural peeled pine secured by hemp rope complements the cedar deck. The architectural wall supports a cantilevered stair that leads to an upper observation lookout surrounded by a glass and stainless steel handrail. The deck is supported on steel screw piles and sheltered by a tensile fabric canopy fastened to two large rolled steel arches.
Over many years, Bird has successfully completed a long list of projects for Suncor including a number of monumental civil works, mine services buildings, workforce accommodations, administrative and process facilities. Subsequently, Bird was quick to commit to Suncor’s request to assist in the design and complete construction of this high profile project in time for the formal unveiling.
