Bird Construction Inc. has been Awarded the Contract to Execute, Under a Design-Build Model, The Eric Hamber Secondary School Replacement Project in Vancouver, BC

Bird Construction Inc. (Bird) announced today that it has been awarded the Eric Hamber Secondary School Replacement Project in Vancouver, BC for approximately $92 million, under a design-build contract. As part of the Provincial Seismic Mitigation Program, it is the Ministry of Education’s top priority to ensure all students in British Columbia attend seismically safe schools as soon as possible.

The new school will be built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Standards. Design and permitting begins in early 2020, and the new Eric Hamber Secondary School is expected to welcome students in the fall of 2023.

The project will also include the construction of a City of Vancouver-funded 69-space childcare centre on the school roof, in a unique partnership between the Vancouver School Board and the City. In addition to the importance of ensuring seismic safety for all students and staff, this project also helps to further the City of Vancouver’s commitment to creating quality childcare and creating complete communities for all families in the city.

“Bird is celebrating its 100th year as a Canadian company in 2020, and is proud to be awarded the Eric Hamber School Replacement Project. When completed in 2023, the new school will be a modern, LEED Gold certified facility that is energy-efficient, sustainable, and seismically sound. Bird has an impressive history of educational facility delivery across Canada and this further adds to that resume,” said Mr. Teri McKibbon, President and CEO of Bird. “The innovative, contemporary design for the new school will
provide a safe environment for students and educators that inspires learning and creativity.”
